We live in a fantastic region I am proud to call home...
Why School Board Governance Matters
Ontario’s publicly funded education system is changing... The province has placed greater emphasis on student achievement, financial stewardship, accountability and effective governance. These changes reflect a recognition that school boards have an enormous responsibility: they oversee public resources, set priorities for education across the region, and ultimately help create the conditions for student success. (Ontario)
Why the focus on accountability?
Most school boards work hard to serve their students and communities. But there have also been situations where boards have faced challenges with governance, financial sustainability, internal conflict or a lack of clear focus on student outcomes. Ontario has responded with stronger expectations around governance, trustee conduct, strategic planning, financial oversight and accountability. (Ontario)
For parents and taxpayers, I believe these changes reinforce important principles:
- Student success must remain at the centre.
Board decisions should ultimately be measured by whether they are helping create the conditions for students to learn, grow and succeed. - Public dollars require careful stewardship.
School boards manage significant public resources. Budgets should be transparent, sustainable and aligned with clearly identified priorities. - Good governance requires accountability.
Trustees need to ask thoughtful questions, understand the information before them, monitor results and be willing to address problems when something isn’t working. - Long-term planning matters.
Decisions about schools, facilities, staffing, programs and resources can affect students and communities for years. Good governance looks beyond the immediate issue. - Parents, students and educators need to be heard.
Trustees are the link between their communities and the school board. Listening to those directly affected by board decisions is an important part of the job. Ontario law specifically requires trustees to consult with parents, students and supporters and bring their concerns to the board. (Ontario)
So, what does a school trustee actually do?
A trustee is not the principal of your child’s school, and an individual trustee does not run the school board.
Trustees are elected members of the board. They work collectively to set direction, establish policy, approve the budget, oversee the board’s strategic priorities and hold the Director of Education accountable for implementing the board’s decisions. Day-to-day management belongs to the board’s professional staff. (Ontario)
A trustee’s role includes:
- Listening to parents, students, educators and the community
- Bringing community concerns to the board
- Setting strategic priorities and monitoring progress
- Overseeing responsible use of public funds
- Asking questions and challenging assumptions when appropriate
- Making decisions about schools, facilities and long-term planning
- Holding the Director of Education accountable for delivering on the board’s priorities
- Keeping student achievement and well-being at the centre of decision-making
Importantly, trustees do not make these decisions individually. The authority belongs to the board as a whole. That makes collaboration, respectful debate and good relationships essential to effective governance. (Ontario)

Student Achievement
Every Board decision should begin with students in mind, where they are now, with a vision for their success.
I will support high academic expectations, along with the resources, relationships and environments students need to feel safe, connected, and ready to excel.

Responsible Governance and Spending
Trustees oversee significant public resources.
I will ask thoughtful questions, set clear priorities and support investments that improve education while protecting the Board’s long-term financial health.

Supporting Our Educators and Staff
Strong schools depend on talented, supported people.
Healthy workplace cultures require effective leadership, vision, clear communication and the tools employees need to serve students well.

Planning
Changes in Enrollment create pressure on school capacity, transportation, staffing and programming. I will advocate for forward-looking planning so schools and resources keep pace with Wellesley and Woolwich.

Accessible, Constructive Leadership
Disagreements will be approached professionally with respect, I will listen, communicate openly, and advocate for students and their parents.

Safe, Welcoming Schools
Every student and staff member deserves to be safe and treated with dignity and respect.
